Postcards From Corncobville, #4

By White Feather

The farmer's market finally opened up last week. They did not have much to offer but it is still early in the season. After a four month drought the local fruits and veggies have been struggling. Two weeks straight with high temperatures between 105 and 115 degrees did not help. We finally got rain a couple of days ago, however, so hopefully things will get better.

It was a good rain. It lasted, on and off, for around ten hours. We got around two inches of rain, which is more than we have gotten collectively over the last sixty days. The local corn farmers are surely dancing a jig. What I really like about that rainstorm is that it significantly lowered temperatures. The low 90's seem downright cool compared to 115.

I guess the reason I mentioned the farmer's market is because right now I'm eating a delightfully delicious cantaloupe that I bought there. I suppose it is probably rude of me to type with my mouth full. Of course, you would not have known that except that I told you. So forgive me....but I just can't stop stuffing more cantaloupe into my mouth. This cantaloupe is approximately 6,000 times more juicy and flavorful than that cantaloupe I bought at Wal-Mart about a month ago. I hope I do not drip any cantaloupe juice on the keyboard.

Don't you just love orange food? I know I do. Cantaloupes, apricots, peaches, mangos, yams and sweet taters, pumpkins, oranges, carrots; if it is orange it is no doubt healthy for you. Peaches, I have to say, are my most favorite ornage fruit--maybe favorite of all fruits. Someone once said to me, "Biting into a good juicy peach is like french kissing God." When I first heard this, many years ago, I was somewhat taken aback. After all, we are not supposed to talk about God and sex in the same sentence--maybe not even in the same paragraph. But years of reflection have allowed me to see the beauty in that statement. What I do know is that biting into a fresh juicy peach is an opportunity for us to experience pure joy and joy is what connects us to the All That Is. Peaches can actually show us what an incredible paradise we live in.

I cannnot wait for the Colorado peaches to arrive later this month. If they are as good as last year then I am in line for some colossal joy. We send Colorado corn and Colorado sends us peaches. Personally, I think we get the better end of the deal.
